Distribution: This epipelagic fish favours the north coast of Africa all the way to Thera in Turkey in the Aegean Sea. It is however found on the north and south coast at the entrance of the Mediterranean in the Strait of Gibraltar.

Habitat: A slender fish that moves in shoals over deeper water than other family members who move much closer inshore regardless of depth.

Size: Common: 30 - 60cm, maximum: 100cm
