Gibraltar Marine Life Conservation
Marine conservation was the starting point for the Helping Hand Trust and continues to be a major part of our work. We cover all aspects of marine conservation and our Chairman, Dr. Eric Shaw, is frequency asked to advise and give talks on marine matters. The Helping Hand Trust is probably most famous for its work on Dolphin protection and the Artificial Reef.
Artificial Reef
We monitor, and when possible increase, Gibraltar’s Artificial Reef. The Reef begins at the South Mole on the western side and stretches around Gibraltar to the eastern side as a network of diverse structures for life in the sea.
In July 2013 HM Government created their own artificial reef. The Helping Hand Trust was asked to consult Government on the design of perforated concrete blocks which were put in an area where illegal conch-rake fishing was taking place.
Dolphin monitoring and protection
The Helping Hand records the numbers and movements of cetaceans within the Bay of Gibraltar. Also we record deaths of dolphins and try to determine cause when possible.
